I think it will depend on what's left at the bottom Mark. If it's too low to get the clean cut below it and the break is rough then water will get in and then rot. If you can get a clean cut you should be OK

  • Losing the Aztec Pearl gave me the opportunity to strip out the whole bed and replant with heleniums, totally tangerine geums, blue scabious, crocosmia lucifer, golden rod (a clumpy one), echinacea, and some other yellow/orangy bits and pieces.

Not sure why the Aztec succumbed but it was thriving when half died, followed by the other half.

  • I have some Amsted cuttings on the go, so may try them. Amazing plant. Thanks

  • We have planted about 24 red robin last spring to make a hedge and they haven't grown at all! should we cut them back to make them grow or feed them more?

  • My red robin always looked untidy, as only 3 years old and straggly. So I chose the strongest upright stem and cut all the others off at ground level. I now have a standard one that I can grow bulbs under. I'm slowly getting it into a lollypop shape, and each time I trim a bit off it shoots lovely bright red leaves. A really nice show through dull winter months. 3ft tall now.
