Hi I absolutely love daylilies and I have quite a few in my garden. Unfortunately I found distorted buds this year, too, and it is upsetting to take all the buds off. I have heard that it only affects early varieties, so I am still keeping my fingers crossed for the plants that still look OK.
I don't like to spray but I do spray against lily beetle (oh yes, we had lots this year) and I have read on the internet that you can spray daylilies with a systemic insecticide early in the year and I am going to try that.
So far I had to take the buds off 'Black Magic', 'Awesome Blossom' and 'Whichford'. There is a form on the RHS website that you can fill in to report gall midge in your garden.
I hope we will have better luck next year Regards, Michaela
