  • Hi Simmo45, I dont think there is. I had it at the farm and they said the only way to get rid was to remove all the infected soil and replace it. It can last upto 20 years in the soil. I did however see a wee bit on a programme (cant remember where it was) but the guy said he added loads of fresh compost with a mix of lime and sand. He didnt have a problem where as the rest of the allotment had infected soil.
  • Oh, sorry. I grow my carrots in pots/tubs. Always had a great harvest and no worms image

Hi Simmo  have you tried putting a piece of rhubarb under your brassica plants,  about two inches long, pointing up.  this method was given to me by my father.   i have had agreat deal of sucess, but it does not work on all soils.   best of luck  Wuz

I read about planting carrots between rows of onion and garlic and it worked - no carrot fly - where as the allotments around me suffered

I have also been told that you can hoe carrots up but not tried this

  • I was told by a very respected gardener to water drills for carrots with a solution of 1 gallon of water and 1 capful of household liquid bleach .Soak the drill then sow seed. It does help reduce any "fly" lurking in the soil.

I also cover crop with enviromesh.
  • I have a bad infestation of carrot fly larvae in my garden, how can I treat the soil to get rid of them, so that I can grow veg next season. I realise it is a good idea to avoid the carrot family next season.
  • I have had some great carrots this year with no problem from the fly because I have grown then under a fleece tunnel which is in a 2 foot high enviromesh barrier, I was wondering if it would be alright to remove the tunnel but it seems that carrot fly are active until November.
