I tend to leave the flower stem until the flowers are no good for the bees - I just think Hostas are supposed to flower - then cut them to the base once flowers are over - hosta give away - count me in!
I split my hostas in spring, whether in pots or in the ground, when they start to show their noses and then pot up and sell spares at an annual charity sale I help with and swap any others with my gardening pals.
If I split them in autumn I find they sulk and often die so spring divisions for me.

Dead heading of so many plants is a good idea, but I so rarely seem to find the time, even though I can spend hours sitting and staring into space. Just lazy I suppose. It is on my list today, but not started yet,

When I was at my fave Hosta nursery a couple of weeks ago, the boss was splitting hostas and repotting.
