Hello to you all, I'm in need of more help please. I have these plants in tubs, I planted them last autumn as small plants I got from B&Q. They were in flower at the time.......I think!  I know that they are a Dianthus, but can't find out which one - border, annual, perennial, pinks, carnations, sweet williams etc.....so many !  I did collect some seeds from them back in June and today I have pricked them out, they are still quite small  but hope to plant them out in Sept. The parent plants were cut back, as I didn't what to do with them( my motto is- if unsure, cut back, and wait !), and have now bushed up again and some have bloomed again. Can anyone give me there correct, full name and advice on the best way to care for them (old and young plants) over the winter months, thank you so much.

Hard to tell the scale - could it be Dianthus deltoides 'Arctic Fire'?

Hi Buttercupdays, thanks for taking the time to respond. I've just googled your suggestion and sadly it doesn't sound like mine, but once again thanks for your help.

Here are a couple more pics that might help gauge the scale better

They look a little like my sweet williams.

Thanks Ladybird, I did wonder if they were sw and infact I have labelled the seedlings as so, but just wasn't sure. Do you think they will be ok to plant out as very young plants over winter or should I keep them in the greenhouse, which is unheated but bubble wrapped. Thanks again.

They look like sweet Williams to me. Mine are in a flower bed...they have been flowering since Spring. Last year I cut them right back when they finished flowering and they flowered again in late August! They are so easy to grow from a packet of seed. I do this in June/July and plant out in Autumn.

Hi Flowers in the rain. Mine stayed out all winter in a trough near my back door and I had cut them back after flowering. I wasn't sure if they would overwinter but they have survived and look and smell beautiful now. It is a little bit sheltered near the back door so maybe that helped but they did get buried under the snow at one stage.

Thanks Berkley and once again Ladybird you have both been very helpful, I have cut them back and they have indeed perked up and produced a few flowers already. I will do what you have done Ladybird and find a nice sheltered spot to overwinter both old and new plants, I so love these little flowers and as you say they smell so beautiful don't they. Ta muchly once again.
