Any updates on the penstemons flowering?  Mine flowered non stop last year, I pruned them back in about March this year and they've put on lots of lush growth but hardly flowered at all which is very disappointing!

I'm not terribly successful with cuttings - I've tended in the past to separate layered shoots - will this achieve the same effect?

I took some cuttings 2 weeks ago of some Penstemon in small terracotta pots using mpc and grit.

They have tiny leaves coming from the side shoots so I'm hoping that these will have rooted in a week or so's time so I can pot them on image

  • I have taken a lot of this autumn but I need to trim down the main plants. Do you suggest that I cut them down to the ground, split them or cut them only half way.

Leave them for now then cut them down by around 80% in April.

The ones in the greenhouse are all doing well. I should get some photos to show you.

  • It has been very interesting and helpful too reading all your comments.  I took a few cuttings last September, all have been successful and I even had one little plant in flower over Christmas. I will certainly try some more when I prune them in a few weeks time.

Oops forgot about this, Here are the pics of my cuttings, I had to throw 2 away as they were badly frost damaged somehow, must have been a gust of wind when I opened the door.

But these ones are doing great
