I have never, ever had them eaten like that nut. But the butterflies come just the same, I assume they breed in the hedgerows there are miles of open spaces around here, I drive 30 miles to my daughter and see nothing but hedgerows and fields, apart from Bodmin, but even then that's very open, which is why if I want to put the odd few slugs pellets in my garden, I don't feel guilty.
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.
Have not checked our pond for newts Nut . You cant see them unless you take a net and fish around, Last done several years ago. Our newts are the protected great crested and when checked there was a lot
We have always seen our newts in previous years conifer. We have a video of one laying eggs and we often saw them just under the surface. Also there's that movement of water as you approach that shows they've just dived. Very little of that this year and I've only found one in the garden. In previous times they were much move visible and I found them in the nursery under seed trays
Nothing like that this year.
We have (or had) GCNs and smooth newts naturally occurring and some rescue palmates

I wish there was such a thing as a nettle eating butterfly. I'd encourage them to come and relocate to here
If you get small tort or peacock caterpillars on the nettles they are defoliated in no time NL
