What to plant next to a hydrangea?

LadyVLadyV Posts: 2
Hi Everybody. I'm new to gardening so please forgive me if this is a silly question. My mum gave me a hydrangea plant to put in a small area I cleared for a flower bed. At the moment it's just the hydrangea in the area and I was wondering what else would be suitable to plant together

Other perrenials that grow lower than the hydrangea will do well such as daylilies and dwarf type agapanthus

Or taller, such as Eupatorium... Hydrangeas will like moist and somewhat shady conditions, so all sort of damp, woodland-ish subjects will fit well. Ferns, say. I find Hydrangeas have a solid, matronly, Victorian presence that needs leavening with something fluffier, airier. Astilbe, comes to mind too. Even meadowsweet. And something vertical and strappy and bold to bring all the fluff together, like yellow flag or phormium (can you have phormium in half shade in the UK?).

And i would not neglect early spring bulbs right under the skirt of the hydrangea image

Thank you for your replies. I don't know what colour it is. When my mum had it in her garden, it hadn't yet flowered, at the moment it's pretty much twigs sticking out of the ground.

Thank you Verdun I think you have solved my problem-not enough moisture
