Mystery Indoor Plant

I was given this by a friend about a year ago.  It has two leaves and is about 4 inches high but it has never grown in any way in all that time.  Can anyone please identify it.  My friend thought it was of the orchid family.

Hello , This is a photo of the same plant but not mine - mine only has two leaves!.. It just hasn't grown. Thanks for help. If I can identify it then I will know how to look after it.

Think it's a Tradescantia zebrina - there are lots of different colours.  They usually strike easily from cuttings but sometimes they stall - has yours actually got any roots?

Just had a look and there is a quite small white fleshy tuber.  Maybe its just taking its time!  I've had it for over a year.  Maybe it is of the orchid family?  Hope I haven't upset it.

Patience.  It needs time to grow its roots before it can grow foliage.

Oohh, that poor little thing is indeed an orchid! I've got one of those at the moment here in the office! image

It's a Ludisia discolor and it gets spikes of lovely little flowers. Doesn't want too much light. Semi-shade is perfect and it can even live in a damp environment like a bathroom.

Water once a week, but take care not to leave any water standing in the pot. And if youn feed it once a month with some orchid food it will be really happy.

It usially flowers in winter and wants temperatures between 10 and 30 degrees centergrade.

I hope yours will recover, but they're rather tough little plants, so with a bit of luck it'll be alright.

    Good luck. image

Thanks so much.  I think you are right.  I will follow your instructions and keep fingers crossed.  I don't like to lose a plant , will fight to the end!

    Many thanks to everyone.
