Lavender has no blooms

Hi all

I was given a French Lavender in full bloom. Since being repotted in terracotta outside (since March) all the flowers have disappeared but the green bit looks healthy. I have fed it, and watered in extreme heat. It gets full sun. I know NOTHING about gardening but I am determined to learn how not to kill things! Any advice greatly appreciated. Thank you image

I'd stop feeding it, that might be the problem it's made a lot of growth without the flowers.image

Can I say what you are wrong I think is watering it in extreme heat as that acts like a steamer in the kitchen it`s boiling the plant & yes lavs love full sun so your doing that part right image

maybe water when the sun goes down or first thing in the morning but don't over water it like with any plant think about adding tomato feed in liquid form as well not neat but in a watering can..

    hope that helps image

PS I`m no expert it`s a matter of reading a lot watching & gardening programs

  • It needs free draining and chalky alkaline soil.

I'm thinking you might be too kind to it.... is it in compost??  Are you over watering it?

  • Ah, thanks everyone. So do I cut the dead flowers off just at the flower base?

I didn't mean I was watering it in the sunshine, I meant I only watered it when we'd had a lot of sun, sort of twice a week. But I'm in South London and we're getting loads of rain, so no watering for a bit, I guess?

It's in normal multi-purpose compost not special compost. My mum mentioned tomato feed, too. At my local garden centre, I was told to feed it twice a week with Miracle Gro All purpose feed. So is that not good advice?

Lavender doesn't need feeding they'll grow anywhere, just cut off the flower and stem still water it in hot weather. I've seen lavender grow in cracks in pavement.image
  • cut off the whole stem?

Cut off the whole stem with the dead flower on the end.

As NorthernLass2 mentioned, lavender needs free draining soil. You mentioned you had planted it in normal multi-purpose compost, but you should have added lots of grit to this at planting time, perhaps 50% by volume.

Have a read of this thread (ignore the title!)...
