Can you advise the best way to prune a rampant Tamarisk tree?

Thankyou for your help. Ours is spring flowering.
We have a spring flowering shrub that grows rampantly. We recently re-modelled our front garden and the contractor took a chainsaw to the Tamarisk and cleared it back to the main, woody stem (trunk). We thought that would be the end of it, but this year (2 years since the haircut) it has been glorious - a picture of frothy pink in spring and a feathery delight since.the flowers faded. It's about 3M high and 3M soread. My experience, therefore, is - don't be afraid to cut hard now and then. you may lose a season's growth but it will reward you from then on.
