Chive advice

JoneskJonesk Posts: 205

Hello again!

Some advice required re: improving the appearance of my chives! They are in quite a prominent spot in my garden and have now finished flowering. I've removed the dead flower heads (collected tons of seeds!!) but the foliage is straggly/yellowing/thining.

Could I cut them back hard and let them re-grow or am I stuck with this rather unattractive look. They were looking very healthy pre-flowering so I think they were previously happy with their garden position and soil.

Cut them back to ground level and they'll soon re grow a lush green.  I do this every year after flowering and they just get better and better each year.  They're also very easy to split when the clump gets too big.  Just dig them up and pull the bulb-lets apart and replant.  I grow a border of them around my fruit bushes to help keep bugs (and birds ) at bay.  Plus the bees are attracted to the flowers.

    Thanks Dorcas,

Just popped out and cut them back now whilst it's cool. I'll give them a feed in the morning. Many thanks - looks tidier already! image
