Red acer turning green

Hi, can anyone help me? I have a 15 year old red acer I had to repot this year as the old wooden pot fell apart. Read in a garden mag to use John Innes 3 to repot it, which I did, now the underside of all the leaves are turning green. It was originally in general purpose compost. How do I get it back to its lovely red.

This can happen when a starved tree gets a sudden abundance of food.  As the nutrients in the JI#3 start to get used up it will sort itself out and should not look so green - next year it will probably be back to it's usual colour. image  Expect strong new growth next Spring, too.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Thanks for that thought I might have to repot it back into compost but will hold out for next year now.
