I have a blackcurrant and a redcurrant to plant on my allotment - clay soil and still rather sticky down here on the Somerset Levels after all our flooding.
I have read that you should cut the shoots down to three buds when you have planted them. Any advice on this? I have some manure to put round them after they are planted, as per what I have read.

Yes, that's the best way to plant a blackcurrent. However, for the redcurrent, cut back any branches that are hanging less than 3" above the soil to the stem, and shorten all other branches by a third.

I shall get them in today while it's not raining - for once! Need some netting to stop the deer nibbling the buds as well, so I shall have to go to the garden centre.....
