What could be eating my sunflowers etc.?
in Talkback
Hi, this is the first time I have used this site after just joining so hope I'm using it correctly. My sunflowers are now in raised beds and doing fine but something is eating them and I can't see the insect just slime on the back of the flower head. There are tears in the leaves where they have been eaten too. Are they slugs? I haven't spotted any. What is the best thing to treat the plants with and resolve the problem quickly?

Hello and welcome Bananapants
It'll be slugs and snails - go out at night with a torch, pick them off and put them in a bucket of salt water.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Def slugs and snails as Dove has said, the slimy trail is the give away
Perfect use of the forum btw, and welcome Bananapants
Thanks very much for your quick and kind responses!
I will do that. I have tried putting crushed washed egg shells round my hostas and that seems to be working. Has anyone else had success with this and would you recommend anything else? Does anyone use slug pellets etc.? Also is it better to strip the leaves (they look unsightly anyway) on any plant that's been attacked by slugs to encourage new leaves and make plant look better eventually?
