Stoney Soil
Hi,
My soil appears to have more stones that soil. Large, medium and small. You name it, I have it. I am trying to dig in some new flower beds which, as you can imagine, is a nightmare. Once I have lifted the turf, I immediately hit stones. This continues for at least a foot as I have dug down that far. I was thinking I would dig out 12" of the stoney ground, sieve out the stones and then add compost and organic matter to the remained soil. Is 12" enough? I will be planting perrenials, shrubs and bulbs in the borders mainly.

Hi Adam, I Think a foot should be enough for perennials and shrubs, my brother had 'soil' like yours, he made a rockery type area for alpines, He said he decided to think of it as quarrying stones for the rockery rather than getting irritated at the stoney ground, he got a two for one
Hi Adam,
Could you describe the soil type you have please?
would you say it`s possibly Clay?
Thanks so far everyone.
If I think of it as pots, how much bigger should I make the hole around the plants I am putting in? Twice the size would suffice?
I wouldnt say it was particularly clay soil. In some area's it seems quite 'good', sandy, crumbly. The deeper I go the more clay it gets though. It is definitely acidic as I have tested for this.
