Weed with black pods

Hi all! I'm a newbie gardener who has inherited a jungle of a garden in my recent house move. Please could anyone help me identify a weed with black pods which has spread rapidly in my front garden? The pods are shooting seeds across the plant beds so it's growing quickly. I am currently trying to get rid of it but worried that it will continue to come back as I cannot identify a root. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

    Hi Carys

Lots of plants have black pods. Can you do a photo, or a fuller description, shape of leaves, colour of flowers, height, any else about it

  • I have photos but not sure how to upload it to this forum? It has long arching stalks that are tangled between all the other plants and small (elongated oval) leaves.

Thank you for any advice in advance. image
  • The leaves look very similar to vetch (just googled that) but it doesn't have any flower on it.
  • That could be it. The pods look similar but many many more of them!
  • Any idea how to get rid of it? ????

Vetches are good in a grazing meadow and make high quality hay image

Just thought I'd mention that ... image

  • Thanks all for helping me identify it! Took me all this time to unravel it from around the plants! Going to go through the earth with a fine toothed comb tomorrow again! Will put weed killer down before I plant anything else. image (Those last question marks were a smilie, not sure what happened but I wasn't being rude image ). Thanks again x

Don't worry, it's an annual so you just need to pull it out. It will be back next year, yank it out when you see the flowers so that it can't seed everywhere. No need for weedkiller.
