Old rose - Mme Isaac Pereire

RainbowfishRainbowfish Posts: 276

At the beginning of the summer I bought a small rose plant/rooted cutting. I have been nurturing it and potting it on all summer and it is growing very fast.

It is meant to have been Mme Isaac Pereire but I have just noticed it has 7 leaflets per stem. Most roses only have 5. 7 is meant to indicate suckers.

Have I been sold a rose species that is usually used for root stock for other rose varieties or does this old bourbon rose actually have 7 leaflets?

I think it should have 5 largish leaves. I have grown it in a previous garden but not this one.

Seven leaflets doesn't always indicate a sucker - that's true for a hybrid tea but older types of roses frequently have more leaflets.

I'd wait and see - if it's a cutting on its own roots it won't have suckers.
