Beetroot leaves - stained?

I have noticed over the last week or so that the leaves on the my beets have some sort of staining. It almost looks like someone has spilt water on a printed page and the ink has run.

Any idea what this could be?

I think they have some sort of leaf miner. If you hold the leaf up to the light, are the paler bits transparent.?

  • I'm not too sure, I'll have a look when I am next down my allotment. I've just been reading about these and have recently sown swiss chard and spinach fairly close to the beets!

Is there any way that I can protect these new plants from becoming infected?

Can I save the beets or will it be too late?

They will be fine to eat the beetroots. The leaves are too big already for salad leaves.

  • Well the beets are very small at the moment. Will they still make it to become large beets?

Probably. Only part of the leaf is affected.

Are you able to water them on the allotment?  Otherwise they'll take a long while to grow and may become tough and woody.
