Can bramble push through mulch?

Chris MasonChris Mason Posts: 159

I've set up a small wildlife area, this morning a decided to turn over a little patch of ground, throw some compost in and apply a lovely composted wood bark mulch over the top of the ground, basically what Im trying to achieve by this is make the ground better for bramble to grow in.

I just have question,   1) the ground I worked today already has a two small pieces of the plant, will this plant be able to send out new shoots and will these shoots be able to push through the 2inch-ish of mulch?

Most definitely. It can push its way through weed suppressing membrane with 2 inches of gravel on top.

That's great news then, the cats will hopefully hate it but hopefully the birds will rejoice at the fact that they can now nest in peace... I've got a lot of song birds visiting my garden, I've also had a butilities nesting in one of the trees buta sadly something disturbed it, I found eggs on the floor and an empty nest a few months ago image

Why not make some nesting boxes to give protection for next year.

Bluetits usually nest in holes in hollow trees or in a nestbox with a small hole - are you sure the nest was that of a bluetit?

To be honest it's a smidge of an assumption, I'm simply going off the fact that the eggs I found on the floor look like blue tit eggs + when this was going on a blue tit kept flying to and from the site where I found the nest. But I now doubt this as its a open sort of nest not an enclosed one...

Esspee- I am, I have only been doing this sort of gardening for a few months, I'm going to be getting a good tough 'predator proof' one.
