Disease or a lot of sun can cause this.

    Which part of the plant?

A lot of clematis lose leaves lower down, or sometimes a stem can get damaged if it's in amongst the plant

I have had this trouble with clematis for years and I think that it may be lack of watering although I did read that once the clematis has flowered it thinks that its job is done so it loses leaves to conserve energy.

Hi Caroline. Most of my celmatis have brown leaves now but they have flowered well.

Brown leaves can have many causes. As it have been bloody hot for a couple of days  they are burnt by the sun and didn't had enough water apparently.

Normally you have to lead the plant to grow upwards and sometimes I bind them to tight which clamps the sapflow.

As far as I experienced clematis don't like fertilizer. Accidentally some fertilizer pellets dropped near my clematisis a few years ago. Within 2 weeks they all died.

Al long as you keep the underground part of the plant wet enough they come back next spring.

  • ive cut it off,and watered.
