Belonging to a professional society gave me access to other benefits including professional support, access to seminars, insurance etc etc. - most professionals belong to something like that.

Social workers also have to pay a hefty annual fee (as well as undertake ongoing training) to remain members of their professional body, and cannot practise as social workers unless they do.
