calycanthus

Hi all, hoping you can help.  I have a Calycanthus Floridus, it is really bare at the bottom and the best advice I can find on google  is to trim back after flowering, if I did that there would be virtually no plant left. So I decided to ask the experts if any of you had any ideas  image

I'd plant something in front of it that masked the bare bits - astrantia would look good, or a lovely purple penstemen image

Thanks Dove, do you think I should take the tops off the main stems to see if it would promote side growth or just leave it alone?  Purple penstemon sounds good
