Hi Everyone, just comeback for more advice please, I am moving to a house with clay soil , what flowers would you suggest will grow well? I always plant Pollinator plants & want to create some lively borders , Connie
Give the soil lots and lots of organic matter (manure/garden compost etc) and your garden will grow almost anything. Roses in particular are very happy on improved clay soil.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Hi Connie you could also put grit in.If its like ours go down a spade and there's grey clay, don't dig it up just break it up and put grit in the hole that should help.
Lots of plants love clay once you get them established. I've always gardened on it. Dove's advice is great - you can't beat manure for opening up the soil, and Logan is also right - dig in grit and also compost - when you plant. Over time the soil will be great
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
I garden on clay, I bought so much manure and grit from GC that they gave me a commercial rate which was nice of them, but once it is all dug in its just really nice moisture retentive soil

Improved clay soil is one of the best soils there is. It is hard work adding manure, compost and grit when you first start, but well worth it!
