Rosa rugosa hips dying before maturity - why?
Hello, I would be grateful for some advice from all you Rosa rugosa growers. My otherwise healthy plant that produces lots of flowers year on year is not growing its hips to maturity, the stems turn yellow and hips drop. I thought that it may be dryness but have increased watering this year without success, I have also tried this year adding wood ash during and after flowering, and chicken pellets early on in the year. It now has as second flush of new growth which may flower, but the hips are still falling off . Any advice???!!! Many thanks!

Is it a variety that sets hips? I have a rugosa hedge, wild edric, and it flourishes but doesn't set hips.
It's a very tough plant. I'd not water or feed, just leave it alone and see what happens. Has it got a cultivar/variety name? I shouldn't think the very double ones produce hips.

Gasp! My Rugosa alba is not setting hips either... I was convinced it was stress and dryness on too young a plant, but now I'm worried... I really like those rugosa hips... for eating too...
Never had hips... it's a cutting I took... let me think... winter 2013? or 2012? Anyway, it grew very quick once it rooted, but it only bloomed the first time this year... I'll give it one more summer to sort itself out (this summer is brutal here... can't blame the poor plants), else I'll def try hand pollination... I mostly wanted the Rugosa roses for the hip juice/jelly!
Logan, just now seen your post, and thank you very much. I will try that next year. lots of bees in garden over other roses, wild, which i dont feed or water, just prune occasionally as they are generous growers. Not sure why wouldn't pollinate these others, but will def give it a go, and will try to remember to post the news!!
