Onions!

This year is our first attempt at growing onions. They are looking good, but not sure when we should lift them? Any advice please. Thank you

  • When the foliage starts to yellow. The thing is that no date can be given because it differs so much depending on the area in the UK where you live.

If the foliage is still green and healthy looking leave them alone.

The leaves will bend over naturally, don't help them. If you need an onion for the kitchen take one.

Finally the roots will die back and the onion will no longer be anchored to the soil.

Dry them off and use any onions which had a flower stalk first as they will not store well.

They will have 'decided' to flower way back, they will not form a flower stalk now if they haven't already.
  • I lift them with a fork to allow a bit of air in (for a day) before harvesting them to dry in the sun
