Patio on a slope

i removed an old wendy house that was in my garden that we no longer wanted. underneath were some paving slabs (the 300mm x 300mm) sized ones and it looked nice so decided i would patio that area right up to the timber sleeper which gave me an exact size of 8m2.

when i came to measure up the garden slops down towards the boundary fence and walls approx 7-8inches. The side up against the sleeper isnt a problem but the other side of the patio would look stupid if i built up the sloping side to match the level patio as it is grassed on the side in question. Now ive never had an issue like this before but i was thinking i could possibly leave a 100mm space between the edge of the patio and grass and add an edging piece of some sort? what would you guys do?

can you load up a photo from your laptop/comp (not phone) click tree icon in message box and ignore error message to load a photo.it is difficult without a photo to know where sleeper is etc and the layout, a photo would really help image

if not, with out seeing it & if i understand correctly, then on the side you would have to 'slope up' to, could you put a small flower bed with height appropriate plants in to hide the 'step/slope up'? you will want a slight slope on your patio for the rain to drain off of patio and away from the house.

I'm assuming you're making it a rectangular patio - just extending it to meet the bed adjoining the other patio? If it was me, I'd re-lay the whole thing so that you can get your levels the way you want them.

If that's not an option, I'd create a bed running along the length of it, linking it with the one you already have, using some shrubs so that it forms a more solid barrier with the grass. image

  • hi i cant put it up to the decking opposite as the slope has caused some space between grass and decking exposing the gap.

option is to build a two sided small retaining wall approx 4 bricks high with a coping stone capping

Ah - did you intend running it the whole way along the fence, joining on to the deck area and the other patio? I thought it was only reaching the patio end with the sleeper edged raised bed.

I had a similar problem at a previous house. We had to make the best of all the little slopes using planting to tie it all together. I think we built a small wall along one edge too. Don't have any pix I'm afraid - pre digital cameras! image

  • No wasnt planning on running on building the patio up to the decking. Yes to counter the fence bollard pabels so have i a flush patio i will be laying a brick line along the fence wall so i have a flush easy to lay patio. I may be resigning to the fact i will build a two sided retaining wall in order to counter the slope on the decking side
