Hollyhock asleep

I have had a black Hollyhock for 5 years now and in all that time it flowered once and wasn't too impressive then.I waited with bated breath this year for it to flower and nope, nothing. It stands at around 3ft tall and had little buds on it but nothing appeared from any of them.It is in a container in a sunny position.

  • I have many hollyhock plants in my garden of many different colours, self seeded and pollinated by insects, bees simply can't get enough of them.  I do not have a black hollyhock, nearest to it is deep red/maroon.  They do not like fuss, mine are growing in sunny spots and very dry areas, all of them neglected by me, but flowering beautifully.  I think you may do better by taking it out of the container which they don't like and plant in full sun and leave it alone, it may still flower this year.  Good luck.

I could be wrong but I think hollyhocks have a tap root, so perhaps the container is restricting it somewhat? Will probably do better in the ground as Cera suggested.

    Good luck! image
