  • Do the oriental ones not grow from seed then fidgetbones? I've always had problems growing all kinds of poppies too.

The easiest way to propagate oriental poppies is by root cuttings, or split a plant in spring. You can grow from seed, but they dont self seed all over the place like the annual ones.

Oh, yes they do. We have a problem with self sown orientails types. I forgot to cut one down last year and now there are a lot of them around the original plant.

If you do sow orientalis seed then be careful what you do with the plants. We put seedlings in a nursery bed to see what colour we got. Big mistake. They are still there despite being dug out every year for the last 15 years.

Susan - last year I sowed some red Flanders poppies and was disappointed when they didn't germinate. Fast forward to this year and I had loads come up after being dug over late autumn. As stated, they do like disturbed ground.
