Hope it comes away Christine. As Berghill says - slugs and snails can be a nightmare when young new shoots appear, and even once there's a bit of woody growth too
Keep a lookout for them in late winter/early spring as soon as you see any new growth and hopefully the clematis will get a chance to get going. Once it's mature enough it'll stand a better chance. Good luck
