Confused

I bought a packet of Nigella in the mist seeds however, it's a red type poppy which is blooming! Has anyone else ever had this. Gutted image

Any chance of cross-contamination as those small spherical poppy seeds get everywhere and germinate where you least want them to...

  • No, in fact I planted the seeds alone in a big pot so I could keep an eye on them.

What did you plant them in , was it bought compost , your own or garden loan ?

Would be interesting to see a photo , any chance ?

  • My own garden soil and compost. I'll upload a photo asap. Thanks granma.

If by this you mean you mixed some of your own garden soil in with some bought compost, then that's the reason: poppies can hang around in your unsterilised soil without germinating for quite some time and then when they get up to the surface they germinate.

Foxgloves do the same thing - if I move soil around from bed to bed in this garden foxgloves appear where they've never been before.  The seeds are tiny, you don't see them, but if they get a bit of light and water, they grow image

  • OK, so the poppies smother the nigella ?

Not necessarily - have you not seen any nigella seedlings?  They're very fine leaves, a bit like grass when they're small.
