i expect this is a weed but not sure,

    If you are referring to the large leaved plant making up most of the photo, then that is Acanthus mollis (bears' breeches).

    No Acanthus is behind it, the plant in question is like a Salvia but the leaves don't smell, it does have big leaves,

    I think it's a salvia. They don't all have the characteristic smell. I have the offspring of one originally grown as Mainatch. I just went out and prodded it and it smells of leaves
