Hi all, I found this growing under a rose and an astilble, I have let it grow as it seems to have a flower spike, but deep down have a feeling it might be a weed. Anyone know?

the picture isn't great but after managing to take it fell head first into the rose!

Looks like a member of the plantain family. ribwort plantain is indeed a weed but there are cultivars of it this may be one of those. I'm sure somebody will pop up with the diffinative id before long.

It's a Greater Plantain and is a weed I'm afraid Cathy.

Looks like Plantago major (Greater or Broadleaved plantain).  As children we used to be sent out to pick the ripening seedheads for the family budgie image

Ah well, I feared as much! When I saw a bit of leaf sticking out thought it might have been a hosta but found this.  My sister helpfully planted six hostas last autumn, not in a clump, unmarked and no memory of where. I've been searching ever sinceimage

You won't find those hostas now Cathy, they would be well up by now, the slugs and snails will have eaten them as soon as the pop out of the ground.
