Blue in a planter

I'm a gardening novice but just had a large planter constructed. I'd really like some blue in the garden. Hydrangea or a Ceanothus Griseus Yankee Point? I realise the former requires aluminium in the soil for it to produce blue flowers.

The Californian lilac is less fussy about soil which means you can plant what you like with it wheras the hydrangea does require a more acidic soil to help release aluminium in the soil so whatever you want to plant with it needs to be higher ph tolerant.

  • That's very helpful - thank you. I hear old screw in the soil help.

yup screws or nails. you can buy addatives in the gc which is more relaiable and keeps the blooms a more even blue otherwise they can look wish washy and start turning pink. This only applies to the hydrangea.

  • Verdun, you're an Oracle.

I'll investigate your suggestions. Thanks ever so much.
