Ash like disease on my plum tree

Last night I went to prune my plum tree to find it covered in a sooty ash like substance. This was also around the floor of the tree. However it isn't on the trees next to it. Also the fruits have gone. The tree is 6 years old does any one know what it is?

I am not sure if its sooty mould. The description suits it perfectly. However I think I had that last year on my bay trees and its not the same. It really is like ash. It's all over the floor too. Thanks for your help
