trouble with sweetcorn

i have planted sweetcorn next to a Jerusalem artichoke, but the corn just doesnt seem to be growing, is there a chance the atichoke is taking all the goodness out of the soil therfore effecting the growth of the corn, any answers or suggestions would be much appreciated

  • Hello rachel herbert2, I too have planted sweetcorn having grown mini ones successfully last year, I am puzzled by them though, as they aren't as big as I thought and appear to be ready (brown tassels) before they have matured.

I read that companion planting of squash in between is fine so unless artichokes are more "hungry" there shouldn't be a problem should there?

I realised they do need quite a lot of watering though, as does the whole patch.  I popped some chicken manure pellets in the holes when I planted them out, have you fed them at all?

Lots of water needed for sweetcorn. It is noticeable that mine have put a surge on after each heavy downpour.  Mine are just starting to show the male flowers at the top but these haven't opened yet. The females(on the side) that become the corn cob, are not yet showing.  I planted my plants out in early June. I wouldn't expect to be eating them until late August.
