Lawn - advice

Hi,

I have attached below 2 pictures of my lawn on which I need some advice please.

In the first one, there are patches of black grass which have appeared after applying lawn feed. Am I right in thinking that it is moss which needs to be removed and then lawn patch work needs be done.

In the second picture, there is a weird type of green grass growing which I cannot seem to get rid of. Can anybody advise how to do it?

Many thanks in advance.

If you use fertilizer to feed the lawn you need to water the grass if possible every day otherwise the fertilizer might burn the grass in stead of feeding it. Don't mow the grass to short during the summer. To short grass starts to get yellow but in most cases it's renewing in early autumn.

Moss is an other nasty thing. During october-march I've moss in my lawn almost every year. In spring it's even more moss then grass. In march/april I'am verticutting the lawn twice and sprinkle chalk. When you sprinkle chalk in october and march/april the moss will disappear.

    Good advice Rinus K.

As for working out from the photos which has happened here, the second photo looks like it is the moss which has turned black (green blades of grass visible in the black area), the first photo is much harder to tell because the grass is mowed so short as to have browned anyway, could be localised mosy patches, or localised over-concentrated feed.

You should be able to tell by getting on your knees and seeing which has turned black, the moss or the grass.....

Despite a lot of work earlier in the year, my lawn is still mostly moss and weeds, but the grass is stronger than ever!

The weird grass is a weed grass, coarse and ugly. Apparently regular short mowing helps reduce the amount, it's a real pain, I have lots.

Poor spreading of weed and feed can kill grass if you overdose. I had that problem due to a useless spreader device.

The black bits do look like dead moss. You will have to rake it all out, reseeding if necessary.
