Indolent Aubergines...

  • I've got them to fruiting size, from seed,  in the spare room - very sunny and with the heater on, but it was hard to keep up with the watering and get the humidity right in the house and the fruits were very small. They were probably much more expensive than those from the SM too!

I had another attempt this year with a variety called Ophelia that are ideal as patio plants and produce tennis ball sized fruits, really pleased with the crop I'm getting.

BLT I sowed the Ophelia seeds indoors on 6/3 all germinated in 4 days. They were potted on 2/4 they went into cold GH on 2/5 we had a cold spell mid May and they needed fleecing image Potted into buckets 1/6 and put outside a week later. First pickings in July and they are still producingimage

How can you tell I'm thrilled image

If you haven't got any decent sized fruit on by now I guess you won't get any image

Yes I guess so, I think my plant looks healthu and I was thinking of getting my buddy to babysit it in his poly tunnel for a few weeks...

Yes I admire your record keeping..  I cheated and bought the plant from a nursery ...Good luck with future sowings...

  • It's been a while since I attempted aubergines I gave up on seeds and bought a few from a nursery and had great crops this year... not sure what the lesson is here except Bob is right veg is an experiment isn't dependent on the weather isn't it. :)

I have not given up I found the gerination to be very poor only 3 plants out of an entire packet of seeds.. So far they all have developed Downey mildew and there is only one tiny aubergine on one plant.. The weather has not been kind !!

I bought 3 grafted aubergine plants this year and they've done exceptionally well, so much so that I don't think I'll bother with seeds again.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Agreed, just harvested 10 of various sizes 3-8inches... from 2 plants, made a mezzo with the tumbling toms and onions from the garden... happy.
