PLEASE HELP US IDENTIFY THIS PLANT

hello this afternoon we were pulling weeds from the garden when I stumbled across this strange plant can someone please help me idenitfy this plant and tell me it's okay to eat? many thanks in advance..

    Could be a type of iris. I agree with nutcutlet. A photo of the whole plant would be very useful to us

    Whatever it was it's not ripe, could it be off a peonie

    I reckon your pod and seeds belong to an Iris foetidissima (Stinking iris) Lauren. You probably opened the pod up half way along the ripening process. They would go from green to yellow to orange as they ripened.

    Yes, it's a dying tradition unfortunately. You are proving to be formidable with regards your knowledge of plants though. I am very impressed!
