old tree new tree

hello we had some winter kill and would like to plant new trees where the old trees now stumps are the only thing that has grown are suckers at the base of the stumps the stumps are only about 6 inches in diameter but the roots are still very much alive how far back do I need to cut the roots to give the new trees a good start

    If the stumps are that small you should be able to dig them all out without too much bother.
