Sick Hydrangea
I have a Hydrangea which was red, now all the blooms have turned brown.
I bought it from Lidl this year, it is planted in the south garden, where it is in the shade for most of the day. I watered it well, and it appeared to be doing fine, so I bought 2 more, one white and one blue.
I planted those in the same location, and they are thriving, with new leaves and new blooms. The only thing that I have noticed is that the white and blue one, get a little more sun on them.
Is the red one perhaps too much in the shade?

How long is it since it was planted in your garden?
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Hi Dovefromabove,
I planted it around 6 weeks ago.
The blue and white were plated a week later.
Here are some pics of them.
Could it just be suffering from the high temperatures and lack of water? It will need copious amounts of water at least once a week for the foreseeable future.
Hydrangeas don't mind the shade., it might be the hydrangeas have been forced into flower and now the flower has finished.if this is the case cut the dead flower off, look after the plants and they should be ok next year.
It's very badly chewed, may be better to cut the losses and cut it right back, hopefully those dreaded bugs will vacate it and new good growth will appear at the base.
its nothing to do with the watering.
Thanks everyone for your input.
Hi Hogweed, you may be right about them being forced to flower. The blue and white ones, certainly have more leaves, and they had new growth, and the poor red one, had nothing, just the blooms that have now browned. I was watering them every morning but stopped when we had a few days rain, but that didn't stop the browning.
Hi Chrissy, yes I'd read that they don't mind a few hours full sun, and that part of the garden gets the sun early morning, and the blue and white appear to be in a bit more sunlight. I was a little scared to do any pruning, but I'll take the bull by the horn, and get on with it.
Hi Lyn, yes it appears to be chewed, we have had some huge problems with slugs this year, but I didn't see any on the blooms, and there is no slime trail, however I have found them on the leaves, and have gathered and disposed of them. Any idea as to what bugs they could be?
Thanks again.
It's not slugs, some burrowing leaf insect
Did you click to enlarge it Charlie? It looks all over it to me, even the leaves are starting to go.
you could try cutting just the flower heads off for now, not sure if it will work, but if you see the leaves get any worse, I would cut it right down.
I've removed all the flower heads, will check thoroughly later what the situation is.
