Sowing grass seed on a patch in high Summer - How to make it work
I have a large dead patch on my lawn where I had a bonfire. I want to sow grass seed on it.
We have a party in 3 weeks. I know it won't be covered by then but I'd like it to look a bit better than it does now.
Reading up the advice seems to be not to plant seed in Summer as it is too hot. But the weather looks fairly overcast for the next two weeks so worth a try?
How can I give it the best chance? Should I bury the seed or just sprinkle on top?
The picture shows the patch (near the back of the photo in the centre)

it only looks a small area could you not turf it? more expensive but instant effect!
Thanks! That's encouraging. I'll do that tonight.
I'll try the seed first as I think turf will just highlight the bad state of the rest of my lawn!
Good question and great answers, think I'll give it a go on a patch used by a pug with over-active bladder !
Well I did this last night. Watered heavily, dug the grass, raked it flat and planted the seed, then lightly raked and walked it in, followed by a dusting of more seed.
Hopefully the dull damp weather will continue until the grass can take hold!
Well it's now 7 days since I spread the seed and it is coming along really well!
I've been watering daily, though only at night because I work in central London during the day. Luckily it wasn't too sunny so the grass didn't get bone dry.
Here's how it looks now...
Because I'm away for a few days next week and I don't want the grass to dry out I have now bought a timer for the sprinkler. It was only a very cheap one but seems to work really well so I feel more confident the grass will survive now...
