Help - my cherry tree!!

Hi everyone, this is my first post to forum!

I planted a cherry tree three years ago. I was worried it was getting too big and that is was too close to the house so in early spring this year before there was any new growth I moved it to another spot in the garden - away from the house and in full sun for most of the day.

When i moved it I did my best get all the roots up. I haven't got the best upper body strength (and hubby quit more or less straight away).

I put fish blood and bone in the hole and have been keeping it well watered when weather is dry.

Basically the problem is the leaves have only grown in very small and some branches don't have any leaves at all. The tree hasn't put on any new growth. It looks generally unhappy and the very top leaves are going brown.

Any help please? Thanks Jacqueline

  • Thanks for that Edd. And here was me thinking i was doing the right thing with the FBB. Oh well. I did remove the few blossoms from the tree in late spring because I had read that the tree trying to produce fruit would be too stressful.

Edd your spot on. Late autum/earlyWinter best time to move trees once your sure the sap is down. Perhaps the sap was on the rise in the tree in early spring and fbb can burn the roots sometimes. Either way as Edd says it sounds like shock. Try a mulch to help keep the moisture in and give it a couple of good feeds. Some TLC should pull it through.

  • Thanks for that Bushman2. I did intend to move it earlier but time got away from me so perhaps it was too late. I will follow your advice. Should i prune it this autumn? It has some very low branches.

Seems like Edd knows a bit more about trees than me geordie what he's saying makes sense. Being from the cooler climbs of scotland fruiting trees are more work so i tend to deal with ornamentals. Horses for courses as they say.

now the north east has some good beers as i seem to remember Edd. but i'll pass on the swap. You can take the man out of scotland but you can't take scotland out of the man.image
