I have grown some sprouts from seed. The plants grew well but when the sprouts formed they didn't stay nice and tight but opened up like a flower. Is there any way I could have prevented this?

Not planted firm enough -there have been a couple of postings recently on the same subject-need to be firmly in the ground and even staked if necessary
