I'm a big fan of fruit trees on dwarving rootstock. Pretty blossom in spring, not difficult to keep in check and good for wildlife. Free fruit is a nice bonus.

Bob - I do like that idea. Just struggling where to put them. Can fruit trees be planted in flowerbeds? I always thought that they needed bare soil around the base?
Yes, I have several in my borders. You can even go for the 'patio' type which don't need much room at all, as those can be grown in large pots. I just make sure nothing 'rampant' is planted too close to them!
