New gardener here
Hi all. I'm new to gardening for a garden but I've been growing fruit and vegetables in my allotment for 3yrs so I know some stuff but no much about flowers and or ornamental plants. This year a lot changed:I bought my own house wich I can do some real gardening (in the rented property I was only allowed to mown the lawn and not change anything in there) and I've been offer a new plot close my new house 3 time bigger then my old one. So a lot of space to get my hand in it. My back garden is north facing and is mainly a playground area for children. I was thinking to make a nice border on the front garden wich is about 10m x 6m and ad course Is 100%south facing with no shadow at all. So the first thing that I will do is get the border in shape (there is only a lawn with a 6ft magnolia tree in the middle wich I will move or get rid of it) dig some organic matter, and start a plan. Any suggestion? Thanks

Hello Sarico welcome to the forum
Thanks perki. Verdin I have ame want all of them. Paving area at the back garden. Lawn and flower bed at the frnot. At the new allotment I have a pond full of frogs, fruit tree and soft fruit bushes, and a big veg patch there. The allotment was very look after by a lady wich she had quite few rose, and flower shrubs wich in fall i wan to take some home to put in my garden. The soil at home seem to be free drainage but I found out that at 1 spade depth is very hard to dig (I hope are not pipe but just clay soil
thanks Logan. I watched all the episode today. Very good show.
have a wander around where you live and see what everyone else is growing in their gardens, it'll give you a good idea what will grow well in your soil conditions and microclimate!
Most of them are growing concrete driveway. I don't understand the need of a driveway when you have only one car and park it on front of the house and having a nice front garden. The other instead have only lawn. But when I drive around I always pick in other people garden.
Hi Sarico, and everyone.
Some great advice from you guys. I myself am quite new to the site and to flower/plant gardening too, so will take advice where I can get it.
I have grown veggies before, but I couldn't keep my sheep out of the veggie garden so I gave up for a couple of years.
This year I'm growing everything in planters, which are in the safety of my patio. I had a deer come into the garden one night when the planters where just to the other side of the patio, and she/he lopped all the tops off the potatoes and sweet potatoes, luckily they survived, and a lesson was well and truly learnt. That night too, it ate my lupins and other flowers.
I myself am a huge lover of Lavender, the deer don't like it (phew)and it grows just about everywhere.
Hi SQ, Deer, come round my sons place at night so he bought some Deer proof netting which helps a lot, maybe you could net off an area with lavender around the outside if this is possible.
Hi Passionate,
I've tried the white vinegar solution, but took it a stage further, I'd read that soaking cloth in it, and hanging it up in trees, is supposed to deter them, so I've put it into some yogurt pots and placed them around my flowered area. So far so good, there have been some fresh tracks, but everything is in tact, bonus is that it has also kept my cats off that area too.
We have 2.5 acres of land, much of which is used for the sheep (just 3) and their hay, and eventually we are going to get a wall erected, at least that's what my husband wants to do. My only concern with that is view restriction, as some deer can jump 2 mtrs. My friend has a veggie plot too, and she had an electric shepherd around hers, guess her veggies were just too tempting as they just charged their way through, lopping the tops of her potatoes too.
