Apple and Pear Blossom

Hi

We planted an espalier howgate wonder apple, and a double cordon pear, last march, and removed all the blossom last year- loads on the apple, 1 flower on the pear. This year the pear had loads of blossom, of which I removed around a third, but only one pear has set. Any tips?

The howgate wonder apple has no blossom this year, but is otherwise healthy apart from some leaf miner moth damage. Is this an every other year tree?

Thanks, I'm very much new to fruit trees!

I think you should have waited and removed fertilized pears rather than the flowers. Until you see the degree of set there is no method of gauging how much of the blossom will be fertilized.

Next year wait until after the 'June Drop' (can be in July) for the apples. Some trees are biennial and the degree of fertilization varies from year to year too.
