Harvesting seeds

hi there

I've spent a lot of money this year on plants

I'd like to know when

And how to harvest seeds from them image

Wait until the pods on the plant go dark brown or black, when you give them a little shake they will rattle in the pods.

Some you can sow straight away, some its best to wait till Spring.

I sowed my Stocks in late Summer, for early Spring flowering, depends what you have.

  • The flowers have nearly all gone will they flower again this year?

Or is it best to leave them die off or take the pods off now and store them

    dry them out?

If the pods are brown and rattling as Lyn describes, you can take them off and remove the seeds from the pods. I'd be surprised if they're that advanced.

  • No they not brown yet

I thought the flowers would have lasted a little longer

I don't grow the matthiola but some plants will produce more flowers if you dead head them but then you don't get seedsimage

yes..and they will go black, then they are ready for picking.

i don't know how many you need to grow but you will get hundreds from a couple of those pods, so if you want to cut the others off, that's ok.
