Sowing pumpkin seeds in July

Hi everyone,

I purchased a variety of pumpkin seeds (Summer Ball F1 Hybrid) last week at my local nursery. I hadn't originally planned on purchasing these seeds as I was not aware of any variety of pumpkin / squash etc that could be sown this late in the year.

I was wondering if anyone has had any experience of growing this particular variety to another variety in July?

I have attached a photo showing the packet. I have sown them in small pots currently in the conservatory and given them a light misting of water. I have not placed them in either a propagator or covered or sealed them in a plastic bag. I figured that as they can be sown directly into the soil at this time of the year, a warm conservatory should be fine without these steps.

The reason I have started them off inside is that they are ultimately going to be growing in small hole in black polyurethane on my allotment and figure it would be easier to transplant them as opposed to cutting smaller holes that would allow weeds to grow through while waiting for germination.

So, any experiences? Advice would be greatly appreciated!

85 days to harvest (according to the packet) is on the short side for a pumpkin so it seems to be an earlier variety. That's 85 days from planting out, so it's going to depend on your growing season - how long it will stay warm enough to keep them developing.

  • Thank you for your response.

I assume as it still says its safe to sow outside in July and the fact that the packaging is based on growing in the UK (apart from the 85 days part) it should be fine. I live in the South so hopefully the weather stays nice.

I guess i'll find out soon, all just trial and error!
