Honesty

Meadow7Meadow7 Posts: 42

Does anyone know if Honesty seeds 'come true'  I have several white plants which I bought and they are covered with seed, and I know they self seed easily  I don't want pink ones in that spot, but would love them to seed if they will be white.  Of course I want to enjoy the seed heads over winter, so there is a bit of a dilemma over timing here.

To enjoy the seedheads you need to see the clear central membrane. That means removing the greyish outer cases and in the process you will release the seeds, lots of them. No dilemma over that part, but if you have both white and purple forms then you will only get a proportion of white seedlings, probably about 1:4. That's genetics for you!

Thanks Buttercupdays, I actually only have white, but there are pink around in other gardens.  Are they fertilised by bees?  If so fairly safe bet that i'll get both.  I suppose I could just pull up the pink ones as they appear and enjoy the gap to fill with something else.

I've never seen a pink one, sounds nice. I have purple and white, and sometimes the progeny is purple-and-white streaked, which I love.

I suppose it is purple really, don't have one so only know it isn't a colour I particularly like!

I have white variegated ones which I like and try and keep them well away from others. They stay much the same.

Where I've let them grow together Gregor Mendel would have a hard time sorting them out.

I've now got variegated and plain leafed white, same in mauve.
